CREATING A BETTER SPACE FOR WILDLIFE AND THE COMMUNITY
Founded in 2011, Penge Green Gym at Winsford Gardens are a group of local volunteers who look after the park. We run weekly sessions to maintain and enhance the space for wildlife and people alike. We have created a children’s play area, bog garden, a wildflower meadow, gravel garden and wildlife pond, raised growing beds and an urban orchard.
Our volunteers contribute hundreds of hours of their time each year. Mental or physical health challenges are no barrier to volunteering and being outside in a relaxed, green environment has been shown to help with many health issues.
Over the years we have hosted events for local nursery groups, schools and brownies, and have worked with groups such as Froglife to run sessions for the local community. We have also welcomed corporate groups who have helped with larger projects such as fence building, and constructing pathways. The yearly open days give us an opportunity to meet and chat with local residents. Our children’s activities, plant and cake sales are always very popular.
Our efforts we have been recognised by many national bodies such as The Green Flag Awards, and The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service.
